Test Code LAB940 Crystal Identification

Important Note

It is recommended that Synovial Fluid be tested for Polarized Light and Crystals within 2 hours of collection. However, Synovial Fluid will be accepted for this test up to 24 hours.

This is the appropriate test to order for a Biliary Drainage analysis, which includes review for the presence of crystals, RBC's, and WBC's.

Pleural fluid may be tested for crystals (e.g. presence of cholesterol crystals).

Specimen Requirements

Submit 3-5 ml of body fluid in an EDTA lavender tube, Sodium Heparin green top, or plain sterile container. Lithium heparin is not acceptable. Invert several times to mix with anticoagulant.
