HbA1c values are lowered in hemolytic anemia because of shortened life of erythrocytes. Iron Deficiency can lead to a decreased erythrocyte mass. In either case, average age of erythrocytes is altered. Caution should be exercised when interpreting HbA1c results from patients with these conditions, and when total hemoglobin is < 9 g/dL.
