Test Code LAB6 Bone Marrow Aspirate and Biopsy

Methodology

Note: Laboratory orders BMO for outpatients and BMI for inpatients.

Includes complete blood count with differential, enzyme histochemistry, H and E stain, iron stain, Wright’s stain, paraffin embedded section of aspirate, and decalcified bone biopsy.

Note: It is the policy of Peninsula Regional Medical Center to do additional special stains as needed based on morphology results. When additional special stains are needed, additional charges will be added for these procedures.

Specimen Requirements

This test must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Call Point of Care at 410-543-7386 extension 6398 to schedule test.

 

Blood and bone marrow slide is required.

 

Blood

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube, and send 4 mL of EDTA whole blood.

Note: Please complete a Request Form K, check bone marrow on request form, include any relevant clinical and family history information, and forward it with specimen.

 

Bone Marrow Slide

Bone marrow slide is prepared at bedside. Notify Hematology when physician is ready to do procedure. A hematology technologist will go to patient’s bedside with necessary equipment for making bone marrow slide. When assistance is not required or hematology personnel is unable to assist, notify Hematology 30 to 60 minutes prior to procedure for delivery of necessary equipment to area, and notify Hematology when procedure is complete for timely retrieval of specimen.

Note: 1. Cell block in formalin may also be submitted.

2. Please complete a Request Form K, check bone marrow on request form, include any relevant clinical and family history information, and forward it with specimen.
