Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tubes. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.

Note: Mononucleosis Serology, Serum (MONO) is quite specific for infectious mononucleosis. People with liver disease (hepatitis) occasionally give positive results. Test may be negative early in disease and may remain negative for as long as 3 weeks. Young children (<12 years) may fail to develop specific antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus. Test remains positive for weeks and sometimes months after clinical symptoms have disappeared.
