Important Note

Off-site Testing Note: This test may also be used for patients from our nursing homes, Deer's Head Center, KDU, or Encompass. Specimens must be placed on ice immediately following collection and spun in a refrigerated centrifuge. Plasma must be separated from cells and frozen within 2 hours of collection.  Always order this test as a STAT if collected off-site.

Specimen Requirements

 

Peninsula on-site collection requirements: Collect a Lavender Top that is completely full. Place tube on ice immediately after collection. Specimen must be analyzed within 30 minutes of draw.
 

Off-site collections: Collect a lavender EDTA tube that is completely full. Place tube on ice immediately after collection. Centrifuge at refrigerated temperature (4° C). Aliquot >/= 1 mL of plasma into plastic screw-top tube. Freeze plasma within 2 hours of draw.


Shipping/Handling Instructions: Unless arrangements are made for STAT courier transports on ice, sample must be frozen at </= -20° C prior to transport. Maintain/transport at </= -20° C until testing is performed.

 

Lavender microtainers may be used to collect heel stick specimens from infants. Try to keep collection time under 5 minutes. Specimen must be full and put on ice immediately after collection.

0 up to 18 years: <51 umol/L

18 years and older (Female): 11 - 51 umol/L

18 years and older (Male): 16 - 60 umol/L

Pediatric Critical value (automatic call-back) <16 years old:  ≥ 90 μmol/L
