Important Note

Verify this order is for Acetaminophen and not Angiotensin Converting Enzyme.

Acetaminophen is normally done to check Tylenol levels when patients overdose.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of lithium heparin plasma.

Note: 1. Early assessment of acetaminophen overdose requires accurately recording time of drug ingestion and time blood is drawn for analysis, include this information on request form.

2. Indicate plasma.

3. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Serum

Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.

Note: 1. Early assessment of acetaminophen overdose requires accurately recording time of drug ingestion and time blood is drawn for analysis, include this information on request form.

2. Indicate serum.

3. Label specimen appropriately (serum). 

Reference Values

Therapeutic range: 10.0-20.0 mcg/mL

Critical value (automatic call-back): >40.0 mcg/mL

Hepatic damage likely if >300.0 mcg/mL at 4 hours post drug ingestion or >50.0 mcg/mL at 12 hours post drug ingestion.
