Test Code LAB2830 - Only Orderable by Lab Blood Type, Recheck, Type 2, Blood

Methodology

Caution: Do not draw at the same time as a crossmatch or a type and screen specimen.

Includes Blood Type, ABO and Rh Type (BTY).

The purpose of this test is to avoid the transfusion of ABO incompatible blood due to specimen collection and identification errors.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen draw requires a second identification of patient. If possible, the draw should be performed by a different person, at a different time from crossmatch or type and screen specimen. It must always be drawn at a different time and only at request of a Transfusion Services staff member. 

 

Draw blood in a large, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube, and send 2 mL of K2 EDTA blood. (Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.)

 

Note: 1. Blood from finger stick is also acceptable.

2. Label specimen with patient’s first and last name, medical record number, date of draw, phlebotomist’s initials, and recipient’s armband number.
