Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube from a fasting patient. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of lithium heparin plasma.

Note: 1. Indicate plasma.

2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube from a fasting patient. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.

Note: 1. Indicate serum.

2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

 

Specimen for a peak level should be drawn 30 minutes after completion of a 30 minute infusion or within 15 minutes after completion of a 60 minute infusion of an intravenous dose or 60 minutes after an intramuscular or oral dose of gentamicin.

Reference Values

PEAK Therapeutic Range:

  >6 months: 5.0-12.0 mcg/mL

  <6 months: 5.0-10.0 mcg.mL

Critical values (automatic call-back)

  >6 months: >12.0 mcg/mL

  <6 months: >10.0 mcg/mL
