Methodology
Includes Antibody Screen, Blood (ABST) and Blood Type, ABO and Rh Type (BTY). A type recheck will be ordered if indicated. Transfusion Services personnel will initiate type recheck.
Patients with positive antibody screens will automatically have an antibody identification performed and 2 antigen-negative units crossmatched if possible. Antibodies of undetermined specificity may have to be sent to American Red Cross (ARC) or Blood Bank of Delmarva for consultation. This test may be converted to a crossmatch if needed by calling ext. 7395 (Transfusion Services).

Specimen Requirements
Draw specimen as follows:
1. A Transfusion Services recipient red armband must be placed on patient after proper and positive identification and prior to specimen draw. (See Transfusion Services Recipient Armbands in Transfusion Services in Special Instructions for additional details.)
Note: To order a type and screen without a recipient armband number, order Blood Type, ABO and Rh Type (BTY) and Antibody Screen, Blood (ABST) or Blood Bank Pre-Admit Panel (BBP).
2. Draw blood in a large, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube, and send 6 mL of K2 EDTA whole blood.
3. Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.
4. Label specimen with the 4-digit Transfusion Services red armband number and phlebotomist’s initials.
5. Patient identification armband and the Transfusion Services recipient red armband must remain on patient until blood infusion is complete.
Note: Type and screen is held for 3 days and released at 0100 on the third day. Call Transfusion Services at 410-543-7386 ext. 7395 or pager 1499 to request a conversion to a crossmatch if a blood transfusion is ordered. This conversion only takes minutes when the patient has no history of antibodies.
