Test Code LAB275 Antibody Titer, Blood
Methodology
Primarily for prenatal patients who have clinically significant antibodies which have been detected and identified. If patient is not known to have an antibody, see Antibody Screen, Blood (ABST) or Obstetric Panel (PNP and PTYSC). If this test is ordered on a patient with no previous record of having an antibody, an Antibody Screen, Blood (ABST) must first be performed. If this screen is positive, the antibody must be identified by Antibody Identification, Blood then, and only then, can the titer be performed. This test is also performed to differentiate active and passive anti D.
Performing Laboratory
Peninsula Regional Medical Center - Transfusion Services
Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a large, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube, and send 6 mL of K2 EDTA blood. (Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.)
Note: 1. Include name of antibody.
2. Titers will be 2-fold dilutions (a specimen will be frozen and retested with the next one).
3. Label specimen with patient’s first and last name, medical record number, date of draw, and phlebotomist’s initials.
Reference Values
Single titers of 32 or above may be clinically significant. Repeated titers are indicated if the titer is ≥8. A change of 2 tubes or more may be significant on repeated titers.
