Methodology

Includes demonstrating presence of antibodies coating red cells. When indicated, a positive Coombs, Direct will be followed up with an elution.

Results on patients >6 months of age will include monospecific and polyspecific results.

Results on patients <6 months will be only from monospecific Coombs (IgG).

Results range from negative to 4+ agglutination.

Cord blood specimen is retained in Transfusion Services for 7 days. To request Coombs, Direct on a newborn, order DAT as a timed request for the exact time and date as cord blood type was ordered.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Capillary

Collect blood in a pink-top (K2 EDTA) MICROTAINER. Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Fill tube to second line with capillary blood, and send K2 EDTA capillary blood.

Note: 1. Indicate capillary blood.
2. Label specimen appropriately (capillary blood).

 

Venous

Draw blood in a large, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube, and send 6 mL of K2 EDTA whole blood. (Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.)

Note: 1. Indicate venous blood.
2. Label specimen appropriately (venous blood).
