Important Note

It is recommended that Synovial Fluid be tested within 2 hours of collection.

However, Synovial Fluid will be accepted for this test up to 24 hours.

Methodology

Applies to ankle, elbow, knee, wrist, hip, and shoulder fluid.

Includes culture and smear, cell count and differential, crystals, glucose, and polarized light.

Specimen Requirements

Specimens received in lab the within 2 hours of collection are preferred.

Specimens received after 2 hours but within 24 hours of collection will be accepted.

 

Collect synovial fluid in a large syringe. Immediately transfer synovial fluid into sterile VACUTAINERS. (Clotted specimen or specimen received in syringe with needle attached is not acceptable.) Submit specimen as follows:

1. Submit 3 to 5 mL of synovial fluid in the UA Non-Additive yellow capped tube. (if ordered).

2. Submit 3 to 5 mL of synovial fluid in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube for cell count, differential, and crystals. Invert several times to mix with anticoagulant.

3. Submit 2 to 3 mL of synovial fluid in a grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube for glucose. Invert several times to mix with anticoagulant.

4. Label tubes with patient’s name (first and last), a second patient identifier (DOB, MRN, or SSN), date and time of collection, type of specimen, and collector’s initials.

5. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
