The PTHPO (PTH preoperative) is ordered before a PTHIO (PTH intraoperative) and collected ASAP by the outpatient laboratory. The PTHIO is collected during surgery.

Specimen Requirements

Submit two tubes of blood (Both are required for testing!):          

 

Lithium heparin Plasma - Draw blood in 1 green-top (lithium heparin) tube. Serum is also acceptable, but not preferred. This sample is used for STAT Calcium, Creatinine, and Phosphorus testing only.

 

EDTA Plasma - Draw blood in 1 lavender EDTA tube. Lithium heparin and serum are acceptable, but not preferred due to delays in testing. This sample is used for STAT PTH testing only.

Note: Intact PTH is recommended initial assay for differential diagnosis of calcium-related abnormalities.
