Nonreactive
Reactive or weakly reactive sera are forwarded to Maryland State Health Department, Baltimore, MD for titer and Syphilis TREP SURE EIA IgG/IgM Test in order to confirm diagnosis of syphilis.
Note: STS screening test is not highly specific. About 10% of the reactive or weakly reactive results are due to diseases or conditions other than syphilis. Among conditions which can cause false-positive results are the following: autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, heroin addiction, infectious disease (infrequently), aging (10% of people in the 8th decade give a false-positive result). Syphilis TREP SURE EIA IgG/IgM Test, on the other hand, is highly specific for syphilis. Although false-positive results are known to occur, they are rare.
