Methodology
Includes hematocrit if patient has not had one in previous 48 hours and removal of 450 mL’s of whole blood from patient.
Note: All phlebotomy orders are subject to pathologist review and approval.

Specimen Requirements
Inpatients
Once order has been reviewed and approved, Phlebotomy staff will call to schedule draw.
Test is performed Monday through Friday 0900 to 1300. Only emergency phlebotomies will be performed on weekends. Attending physician must contact pathologist for emergency phlebotomy.
Outpatients
Test must be scheduled in advance. Call TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Outpatient Laboratory at 410-543-7397 to schedule.
Test is performed Monday through Friday 0930 to 1300 by appointment only. Physician’s order must be resubmitted at least every 6 months and should include primary diagnosis, hematologic parameters to determine need for phlebotomy and volume of blood to remove.
Note: Blood Bank of Delmarva at 410-749-4161 will accept hemochromatosis patients as regular blood donors.
Specimen Collection
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube, and send 4 mL of EDTA whole blood to Hematology Department for hematocrit. If indicated, volume of blood requested will be removed and discarded.
