Methodology

If any mention is made of  “baseline,” “cosyntropin,” “dexamethasone,” or “ACTH” or if cortisol levels are ordered closely together (ie, 0800, 0830, 0900), refer to Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Stimulation Test; Dexamethasone Suppression Test, Low Dose-Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Function; or call Peninsula Regional Medical Center Chemistry at 410-543-7386 ext. 4219.

Specimen Requirements

Morning specimens must be collected between 7 - 9 a.m. (Fasting 6 - 8 hours)

Afternoon specimens must be collected between 3 - 5 p.m. (Non-Fasting)

Random cortisol specimens do not have a collection time restriction.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube. Spin down and send 2 mL of lithium heparin plasma.

Note: 1. Indicate time of draw and plasma.

2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

 

Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube. Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.

Note: 1. Indicate time of draw and serum.

2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

Reference Values

AM Cortisol (before noon):  6.7-22.6 mcg/dL

PM Cortisol (after noon):  <10.0 mcg/dL
