Antibiotic susceptibility tests are not routinely performed on pneumococci or beta-strep isolated from upper respiratory tract.

Peninsula Regional Medical Center - Microbiology

1. Gently insert a culture transport swab about 1 inch into nose.

2. Rotate against nasal wall and remove swab.

3. Return swab to culture transport tube.

(Improperly labeled specimen or dry swab is not acceptable.)

4. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, type of specimen, and collector’s initials.

5. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
