Test Code LAB210 BODY FLUID CELL COUNT WITH DIFF

Important Note

This test is not available on abscess or cyst fluids without a pathologist's approval.

 

Cell counts on bronchoalveolar lavage specimens are done in conjunction with non-gyn cytology testing. Order "LAB13", "Non-GYN Cytology" and add comment "Please perform cell count and differential."

 

Specimens received in lab the within 2 hours of collection are preferred.

Specimens received after 2 hours but within 24 hours of collection will be accepted.

Includes microscopic examination for RBCs and WBCs.

Specimen Requirements

Specimens received in lab the within 2 hours of collection are preferred.

Specimens received after 2 hours but within 24 hours of collection will be accepted.

 

Submit 3-5 ml of body fluid in an EDTA lavender tube, Sodium Heparin green top, or plain sterile container. Invert several times to mix with anticoagulant.

 

Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable. Lithium heparin is not acceptable.

Reference Values

CEREBROSPINAL FLUID (CSF)

Normal adult CSF is clear in appearance, xanthochromatia is absent, and contains 0-5 WBCs/cmm.

The number in children is higher, up to 30 mononuclear cells/mL can be considered normal in newborns.
