Specimen Requirements
Patient Preparation
1. Patient should be on a habitual diet.
2. Patient should be off medications. If clinically inappropriate to discontinue medications, forward a list of medications with specimen and results will be interpreted taking effect of medications in account.
3. Patient cannot have an intravenous line in place.
4. Patient must fast for 12 hours prior to test.
Specimen Collection
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube from a fasting patient. Spin down and send 2 mL of lithium heparin plasma.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube from a fasting patient. Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.
Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
Adult ≥18Y
Normal: <150 mg/dL
Borderline High: 150-199 mg/dL
High: 200-499 mg/dL
Very High: ≥500 mg/dL
Pediatric 10-17Y
Acceptable: <90 mg/dL
Borderline High: 90-129 mg/dL
High: ≥130 mg/dL
Pediatric 2-9Y
Acceptable: <75 mg/dL
Borderline High: 75-99 mg/dL
High: ≥100mg/dL
Reference ranges are based upon National Cholesterol Education Program and American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations as of 2/01/2024. No reference ranges are established for pediatric patients less than 2 years old.
Note: Test results may be affected by any acute febrile illness, patient not fasting, patient receiving intravenous fluids, trauma, or recent surgical procedure. Hence it is not recommended for inpatients.
