Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Capillary

Specimen must arrive in laboratory immediately after collection.

Collect blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) MICROTAINER, and send 0.5 mL of EDTA whole blood. (Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.)

Note: 1. Indicate capillary blood.
2. Label specimen appropriately (capillary blood).

 

Venous

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube, and send 4 mL of EDTA whole blood. (Clotted or hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.)

Note: 1. Indicate venous blood.
2. Label specimen appropriately (venous blood).

  Males

  0-6 days: 17.0-22.0 g/dL

  7-14 days: 15.0-20.0 g/dL

  15 days-1 month: 12.5-17.5 g/dL

  1-2 months: 10.5-13.0 g/dL

  2 months-3 years: 11.0-13.5 g/dL

  4-13 years: 11.5-14.8 g/dL

  ≥14 years: 13.0-18.0 g/dL

   Females

  0-14 days: 15.0-20.0 g/dL

  15 days-1 month: 12.5-17.5 g/dL

  1-2 months: 10.5-13.0 g/dL

  2 months-8 years: 11.0-13.5 g/dL

  9-13 years: 11.5-14.0 g/dL

  ≥14 years: 12.0-16.5 g/dL

  Pediatric Critical value (automatic call-back) <16 years old:  <6.0 g/dL and > 25.0 g/dL

  Adult Critical value (automatic call-back) ≥ 16 years old:  <6.0 g/dL
