Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube. (Grossly hemolyzed specimen or heparinized plasma is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.

Males: 280-300 mOsm/kg
Females: 276-295 mOsm/kg

If a provider is asking for a serum "Osmolal Gap", we do not have a panel that can specifically provide them that calculation. However, they may order a BMP and Serum Osmolality and calculate the Osmolal Gap manually. If ethanol is suspected as a contributor to Osmolal Gap, the provider should order a serum ethanol as well.
