Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of lithium heparin plasma.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.
Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
0-5 months: 1.5-2.2 mg/dL
5 months-6 years: 1.7-2.3 mg/dL
6-12 years: 1.7-2.1 mg/dL
12-20 years: 1.7-2.2 mg/dL
20-60 years: 1.6-2.6 mg/dL
60-90 years: 1.6-2.4 mg/dL
>90 years: 1.7-2.3 mg/dL
Pediatric Critical value (automatic call-back) <16 years old: <1.0 or >4.0 mg/dL
Adult (Not Labor and Delivery) Critical value (automatic call-back) ≥ 16 years old: <1.0 or >5.0 mg/dL
Adult (Labor and Delivery) Critical values (automatic call-back) ≥ 16 years old: <1.0 or >8.0 mg/dL
