Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube. Spin down and send 2 mL of lithium heparin plasma.
Note: 1. Fasting is not required for this test.
2. Indicate plasma.
3. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube. Spin down and send 2 mL of serum.
Note: 1. Fasting is not required for this test.
2. Indicate serum.
3. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
Adult ≥18Y
Desirable: <100 mg/dL
Above Desirable: 100-129 mg/dL
Borderline High: 130-159 mg/dL
High: 160-189 mg/dL
Very High: ≥190 mg/dL
Pediatric 2-17Y
Acceptable: <110 mg/dL
Borderline High: 110-129 mg/dL
High: ≥130 mg/dL
Reference ranges are based upon National Cholesterol Education Program and American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations as of 2/01/2024. No reference ranges are established for pediatric patients less than 2 years old.
Note
LDL is calculated as part of a lipid panel as long as the triglycerides are less than or equal to 800 mg/dL. Above 800 mg/dL, the LDL is not calculated due to potential inaccuracy when triglycerides are elevated. Instead, a reflex order is placed for directly measured LDL.
